Files compressed with newer versions of winrar give errors ("unknow format or damaged archive") when trying to decompress with older versions.

Update your version or try a different program to decompress, if you are having this issue.

It seems like archives created in version 5 have modified the code and will not open in the older versions. Goodbye v.2.0.0  LOL

Well, breaking backwards compatibility is some really creative software development imho.

Started using 7-zip on anything that reports an error with winrar. Rate of success of 7-zip, something like 100%.

Good for you winrar, keep that up!

Just my 2c.

I got me a copy of WinRar about 10 years ago and it told me it was only free for 40 days.

I am still using that same exact copy. It was first on my Windows ME and then Windows XP and now Windows 7.

Still tells me it's only free for 40 days.

I must had RAR and UNRAR 10's of 1000's of files with it in the past 10 years.

According to WIKI, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WinRAR this version came out in 2006.

I just wish people would not rar or zip their files in the first place.
I just makes extra work for us all.

Overall, I don't mind.

For split files, it's a must. Unfortunately, most posters don't use the error checking so it's hard to troubeshoot a bad download vs a bad file.

ALSO
I did get the newest version of WinRAR and when I create a RAR file, there are 3 options now.
RAR4
RAR
ZIP

I believe the RAR option will allow older WinRAR versions to extract the native RAR format.

RAR4 on the other hand will require a newer version

Some file types don't travel well unless they're zipped/RARed, etc. I've especially had issues sending CAD files. DXF, TCW, DGW, etc., all tend to get corrupted unless compressed. I've seen it on several platforms, both Windows and Linux, and via different e-mail systems.

Here's some technical reading for anyone interested.

I find that downloading all 1284 files in a br@__3rs photo set individually is a bit time consuming.

For video files, yeah, it's an extra step but it helps prevent instant DMCA removals...
